The Suffers are Houston’s award-winning 8-piece ensemble that have redefined the sound of Gulf Coast Soul. Established in 2011, The Suffers’ lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose “Chapy” Luna, and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora, while frontwoman Kam Franklin topped off the group with soaring vocals. Thursday 4/19, 6-7 pm, Library Tower South, AUM “Inspired Invention: Compositional Strategies in Cristóbal de Villalpando's Antigua Series,” a guest lecture by Mark A. Castro, Consulting Curator for Latin American Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art. Funding kindly provided by the Department of Fine Arts and the AUM Lecture Committee. Abstract: Cristóbal de Villalpando's painting cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, made for a Franciscan Convent in Antigua, Guatemala, offers a glimpse of the strategies employed by the Mexican Baroque master for developing new compositions that met the political and spiritual sensibilities of his Franciscan patrons. Painting cycles of this type have long been seen as static objects, restricted by the biographies of their subject and drawing heavily on established European print series. Villalpando's paintings instead demonstrate that there was significant creative leeway within which a painter could develop his program, drawing on a variety of types of source material to create canvases that had contemporary implications for the Franciscans in Antigua. About the Speaker: Mark A. Castro is an art historian who specializes in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American art and has worked for the European Paintings & Sculpture Department at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 2007. He has curated numerous exhibitions on Spanish, Spanish Colonial, and Latin American Art, and has published widely on this material. His 2016 major loan exhibition: “Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910- 1950,” traveled to Houston and Mexico City, after its inaugural installation in Philadelphia, was well reviewed by major publications including the New York Times, and was accompanied by a catalogue published by Yale University Press. Previous permanent collection and major touring exhibitions Castro has curated or provided curatorial assistance for include: “El Greco In Focus,” “Journeys to New Worlds: Spanish and Portuguese Colonial Art in the Roberta and Richard Huber Collection,” “Mediterranean Spain: Art from the Crown of Aragon,” and “Treasures: The Arts in Latin America 1492-1820.” His current research focuses on painting cycles depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi produced for Franciscan Institutions in New Spain.

DARKO THE SUPER ------------------------------------------- Darko The Super is an unusual artist in sound and personality. His music tends to be more chaotic and noisy than mainstream artists, but also holding much deeper meaning than most popular musicians of today. For Pennsylvania-based artist Evan Souza (AKA Darko the Super), the idea of self-evaluation through a pointed emotional immolation lies at the heart of his hip-hop reality. His music is almost uncomfortably intimate—there's a sense of intrusion as we hear him dole out experiences that make us cringe while effortlessly involving us in a larger musical scheme. The beats are vibrant and shake the walls around you, even as his words detail dramatic and often-unpleasant events from his past. By stripping away the defenses of his own heart, he gives us a glimpse into the mechanics of his own musical and emotional perspectives. With that being said, there may be no other emcee currently active that is more distinct than Darko the Super. SPEAK N EYE (WSNC) ------------------------------------- Speak N Eye is genre spanning project of brothers Joshua and Aaron Brookshire. Originally from the Crystal Coast of NC, both came into and helped establish the fertile underground music and arts scene during Greenville's explosion of do-it-yourself house and art gallery shows. A move westward to Winston-Salem solidified what would become Speak N Eye in late 2010, as two brothers who cut their teeth in experimental rock bands, decided to put their influences together to form the act which has released 3 full length albums, several EPs, and 2 solo releases. A blend of hip-hop, psychedelic rock, Alan Lomax inspired folk and traditional samples, infused with punk energy and 2 dynamic complementing rap styles. With live shows noted for passion, high energy, and an outreach oriented conviction in the transformative nature of creativity and expression, this duo has traveled far and wide spreading their unique message with audiences in art bars, clubs, galleries, gardens, arcades, living rooms, porches, farmers markets, barns, gas stations and churches all around NC and beyond. Bringing your own dish, cup, utensils, and napkin is also encouraged to help reduce waste. More on Mimouna from Brahim Benmbark: Jews have been living in Morocco for two millennia. This extensive Jewish life in this North African country produced a culture, traditions as well as multiple rites that were forged in the daily interaction between the different populations that inhabited what would become the Moroccan nation-state. Divided into two categories-- indigenous Jews and Andalusian Jews--, Moroccan Jewry is an exemplum of rootedness and openness, which produced one of the most fascinating Jewish cultures. One such fascinating aspect of Jewish-Muslim shared life in Morocco is the celebration of Mimouna—a secular party that announced the end of the Jewish fast of Passover. Mimouna, which means, among other things, prosperous, lucky and blessed, was an inherently North African moment of inter-religious dialogue between Jews and Muslim. During Mimouna Jews and Muslims transcend religious boundaries and embrace each other’s humanity. This Jewish-Muslim acknowledgement of each other takes different forms, which all enact a transformation in these two communities perception of each other. Muslim traditionally bring food for the Jews to break their fast and in so doing their gesture shows support to the Jewish communities. Additionally, Mimouna is a time for dance and merrymaking. These activities require a sense of proximity and a feeling of equality, which are also embodied in dance, wine drinking and the active transgression of religious boundaries. Interestingly, during Mimouna, the Jewish quarter becomes the center of the city or village universe whose throbbing heart is transferred for the duration of the celebration to the Jewish neighborhood. However, the lessons of Mimouna are far deeper and much more profound than just an exchange of festivities and victuals—Mimouna was, is and should remain one of the occasions in which Muslim-Jewish solidarity is embodied.

In 1960, the Philadelphia Planning Commission released its first Comprehensive Plan. This document, which divided Philly into 12 sections, proposed the "organization of residential areas into a system of neighborhoods, communities and districts in order to enhance the local civic identity." From July 2017 to January 2018, Philadelphia photographers documented the 12 section’s unique people and places. The project features 17 photographers who produced an expansive and detailed look into everyday Philadelphia. The show will open Friday, April 6, 2018. A publication will be available for sale. Though she grew up in a culinary family, she spent the first part of her career in business consulting, which landed her in the US. After years of living abroad, her nostalgia for the flavors of home coupled with what she perceived as a dying appreciation for humble Malaysian cuisine back home inspired Ange to open Saté Kampar, a restaurant focusing on saté (skewered meat grilled on coconut shell charcoal) and traditional Malaysian cooking made from scratch. The restaurant quickly became one of Philly’s top restaurants and was nominated for the James Beard Award. Eli Kulp Eli Kulp is a co-owner of High Street Hospitality Group (HSHG), which operates several of the country’s most exciting and relevant restaurants: Fork, High Street on Market and a.kitchen+bar at AKA Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia and High Street on Hudson in New York City. Along with partner Ellen Yin, Kulp is known for his rigorous attention to detail, and works closely with her to oversee operations, business strategy and development, culinary guidance and other group-wide initiatives. Kulp was nominated for “Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic” by the James Beard Foundation in 2016 and named a “Best New Chef” by Food & Wine in 2014. In addition to his work with HSHG, he devotes his energy to his restaurants, serves as co-chair of Food250 (part of USA250) and supports the Institute for Functional Rehabilitation at Case Western Reserve University, where promising progress is being made on helping patients with spinal cord injuries like those he sustained in the Amtrak #188 derailment regain greater function. Michael Solomonov Chef Michael Solomonov was born in G'nei Yehuda, Israel and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. At the age of 18, he returned to Israel. With no Hebrew language skills, he took the only job he could get – working in a bakery – and his culinary career was born. Now, he is widely regarded as one of the country's top chefs. Chef Solomonov is known for his extraordinary skill at transforming simple foods into artful culinary masterpieces. In addition to the James Beard Awards for “International Cooking,” “Book of the Year” and “Outstanding Chef,” Chef Solomonov has been recognized for his many accomplishments by The New York Times, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, Esquire Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure. In 2014, he was named Eater's National Chef of the Year. Today, he can most often be found covered in flour, working the bread station at Zahav's open kitchen.
